Description
Ten years ago in September 1999 Awalim danced onto the stage for the first time at the Friday night show of the Aziz workshop....and we haven't stopped since!!! We have enjoyed coming together again to rehearse and prepare for this show, bringing beloved Awalim favorites out of retirement for a single night's performance which we hope will delight you

Details:
Friday, Oct. 16th 8pm
Kavarna Coffee House
707 East Lake Drive
Decatur, GA 30030
$8.00 at the door

About Awalim:
Awalim was formed in 1999 under the Direction of Ziah Ali McKinney-Taylor as a group to bring World Fusion Tribal Bellydance to the stages of Atlanta and the Southest US. Awalim's particular flavor of Tribal is decidedly upbeat and earthy while being sophisticated and urban, bringing what we feel are Atlanta's strongest characteristics to the Tribal genre.

Ziah and Ava of the Awalim Dance Co have been participating in Shimmy-a-thon since it's inception! Each year we look forward to the community spirit that surrounds the event as dancers come together. Please help Awalim meet our goals in the battle to fight cystic fibrosis. Visit our pages on the Great Strides website!

http://www.cff.org/Great_Strides/ZiahAli

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a devastating genetic disease that affects tens of thousands of children and young adults in the United States. Research and care supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is making a huge difference in extending the quality of life for those with CF. However, we continue to lose precious lives to CF every day. That's why your help is needed now more than ever to ensure that a cure is found sooner - rather than later. To learn more about CF and the CF Foundation, visit www.cff.org.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those with CF! Thank you for supporting the mission of the CF Foundation and GREAT STRIDES!

While running Seladora Dance Company in Waycross, GA, she crossed paths with Natalie Brown and discovered her destiny. She left her life, school and job, moved to Columbia, and spent a year sleeping on the floor at the top of Natalie’s stairs while studying American Tribal Style with Delirium. When Delirium made the switch to Tribal Fusion,Ashley came aboard as a permanent member, and has been a driving artistic force in Alternacirque. With her dynamic solo performances and her knowledge of human anatomy, Ashley is an in-demand instructor.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to give you all an update on the video.

We are just waiting for music from two of the show performers. In order to give you the best quality we can, we softly dub the music over the original footage for that professional quality we prefer to ship out. Once we receive the music, the video will be rendered to a master DVD and ready for purchase.

We'll keep everyone updated.
Thanks!

Muncy McKinney 1937-2009

My mother, Muncy Snow Boyd McKinney, passed away at 10am this past Friday, May 29th, 2009 in Knoxville, TN at Hillcrest North. After 5 months on a respiratory ventilator she decided she was tired and wanted to be free of pain. The nurses and respiratory therapists were very supportive and helped keep mom as comfortable as they could until her body was done. I was with her this morning when she passed peacefully.

Her last conversations were about politics and being a feminist hell raiser in the 70's. She told us a few shocking stories that I had never heard before. I told her thank you for bringing me into the world because I really am having a great time, every day is a joy. We talked about sneaking into movie theaters, water fights in the house, yummy Indian food and scary booktapes on the Natchez Trace at night. Ava gave her lots of hugs and kisses.

The will not be a memorial service but I would love for any of you who have stories or pictures to share please send them to me or give me a call. She will be cremated and her ashes will be spread at her favorite fishing spot. In lieu of flowers or donations of any sort we ask that those of you who smoke or with family members who smoke take a moment out to think about the hardship that it will put on your family to have your life shortened. My mother was only 72 years old and had not been healthy for quite a long time. Her father died of colon cancer from chewing tobacco around the same age.

Thank you to everyone that has supported us over the past few years while her health failed. Especially Kelly Tayes who loved mom's intelligence and humor even during the hard times. Thank you to Lisa who sat with her during her last days so that I could get some rest. Big thanks to Jaia for shuttling me around this week, it was such a big help.

Get involved in Middle Eastern Music!

I would like to start a bi-monthly music salon. What I want to do with this is to get musicians together to play and rehearse music mainly from the Middle East, North Africa, and the Balkans. Everyone, no matter your musical level, is encouraged to attend these salons – drummers, melody players, dancers aka zill players!

Last fall I spent 5 months in Cairo, Egypt where I began my journey into Arabic music. I really don’t want to loose what I’ve learned, so I’d like to see if anyone in the Atlanta area is interested in coming to weekly music rehearsals/ jam sessions/ learning sessions about Arabic music. I would like to be able to share what I’ve learned so I can practice and not forget it! Any instrument would be welcome, just keep in mind that quartertones are harder to play on some instruments than others.

I have some sheet music from this semester in Cairo, but I’m open to learning things by ear as well, which is how it really is done. The
sheet music is all in C as I play the violin, so any of you b flat or F or alto or bass players be prepared to transpose the music if you want to play it.

I don’t profess in any shape, form, or fashion to be an expert in Middle Eastern music, just a student who wants to grow her skills with an ensemble! I would like this to be very low key and fun and hopefully a way to grow a handful of students and musicians that appreciate and want to perform Middle Eastern music, especially so that when the big names come in town, we can really benefit from their instruction.

I am just playing facilitator for this event. I will share my knowledge and I hope others will participate and do the same. Everyone is encouraged to bring both sheet music and songs to the salon for us to play. You do not have to read music to be here, nor do you have to have any experience in music to participate. I would like to be able to foster a community of people wanting to learn music and be able to play at haflas and events.

Here is some general information:

Date and Time:
Sundays: May 10th, May 31st, June 14th and 28th, July 12th
3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Cost:
I ask everyone bring a donation of $5 cash for rehearsal space for each rehearsal.

Place:
We will meet at Awalim’s rehearsal space in the Virginia Highlands
1031 Reeder Circle Atlanta, GA (house is up the hill, rehearsal in the garage studio)

Events:
Eventually I would like to be able for this salon to be able to perform at haflas…

Communication:
If you are interested in this salon, please join the google group: http://groups.google.com/group/memusicatl

Asharah and Mab, Just Mab workshops in Columbia

April's Alternacirque show will be graced with two of Washington D.C.'s finest alternative performers: Tribal Bellydancer Asharah is returning to the Art Bar stage, and we are absolutely thrilled to have dancer, fire performer and sideshow queen Mab, Just Mab bringing her vaudeville hilarity along for the ride. On Friday, April 24th, both performers will join us at Art Bar for our 9:30 show. 1211 Park St. in downtown Columbia, SC, no cover, the bar is 21+ but we're hopefully performing outside, barring bad weather.

And since they'll be in town anyway, we figured we would pick their professional brains about their craft while they were here. In other words, WORKSHOPS!

Workshops take place on Saturday, April 25th. We're in the process of confirming location, but it's likely to be at the Lexington Old Mill. More information as it comes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Technique Intensive with Asharah-- 12-3 PM, $60
Join Asharah for three hours of intense practice aimed at polishing your bellydance technique and building strength and stamina. Asharah is known for her clean technique and muscular execution , and in this workshop she will share with you tips and tricks for sharpening hard movements like hip work and chest locks and for deepening and intensifying smooth movements like undulations and Mayas. She will also share with you a few of her signature robotic movements to add spice to your bellydance movement vocabulary.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Showcraft with Mab, Just Mab- 20 Minutes in Vaudeville! 3:30 to 5:30 PM, $40

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixu3RFStmQk

While there is no shortage of classes on "How To...", it's time to take it to the next level! Take those skills you have painstakingly learned, and work them into a great show!

This class covers how to build a "bit", and then how to take the bits and build a set and a show! We will also develop a toolbox of elements to get the most out of your audience, heckler handling techniques, and much much more. All performers welcome, not just bellydancers. If you're a sideshow artist, fire eater, hula hooper, host, emcee, poet, magician or improv comedian, come along and improve your presentation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Take both classes at the discounted price of $80.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Pay cash at the door, or pay in advance via paypal to natalie_c_brown@yahoo.com. Please specify which workshop(s) you are paying for.

Mmm, that was good. The show rocked (and the Sound of Music is forever ruined to me, yay); the classes were top-notch; the vendors have all my money; and there are new friends to enjoy keeping up with until the next time in Decatur. Way to go, Ziah and crew!

Student Show for a Cause

Fellow dancers,

Sunday April 5th Ziah and I will be hosting our annual student recital at Nicola’s. This year, in addition to offering a fabulous show, we will be donating our proceeds to Shimmy-a-thon, a fund raising event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I would love to see everyone come out to our event and help us support this cause. Tickets and more information are available online at http://nicolaspringrecital.eventbrite.com/.

In addition to our students performing, Awalim Dance Company will also give a performance. We hope to have a great crowd and in true Nicola’s style, get the hafla goin’ after the show! Come to enjoy Atlanta’s best Lebanese cuisine, watch a unique and varied dance show, and support a great cause.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you on April 5th!

Yours in dance,

Now that you remember how much you LOVE the full immersion festival experience, get ready for the autumn!
The website will not reflect the extended deadline until my lovely assistant gets back from Europe - but the extension remains.)

Wasn’t she amazing!!?? She completely blew me away.

Ariellah is an interesting dichotomy in that she has the “dark” image thing going; however, she is really a light, radiant soul, and without the whole big-ego diva thing. Oh, and her performance completely brought me to tears (I’m such a drama queen!) It was a deeply passionate, intense, and vulnerable performance. I was so honored to be sitting on the front row Saturday night. :O)

Hi Ladies!
Just joined your tribe, but I've seen some of your work on YouTube and I think you guys are amazing..
Im doing some field work for this dance course Im taking and was told to pick a couple of ATS/ITS troupes and research somethings about them so if you don-t mind answering my questions, it would be great!
How long have you ladies been dancing for as a troupe?
How did the members come together?
How was your ITS language developed and formed? (what contributed to it?)
What would you say is the key to have a good relationship with each member and how do you work together?
I found a lot of really nice info on your website, but these questions are very important to the task.. so if you could help me that would be great!
Your fan from Mexico

anyone who has stayed at the super 8 nearby before? read some terrible reviews and im wondering if they are true

ok so i booked with the super 8 nearby since the rooms were full......
but after reading reviews online...im getting a really bad impression of this motel...everything from minor details like the management getting pissy when they wanted more coffee packets, to couples being appoached by pushy prostitutes soliciting themself in front of their kids...

i dont expect a luxury hotel..its the super 8 lol. but im just wondering if the ppl who posted these reviews are just mad cause the continental breakfast sucked or if this hotel really is trashy?

if you have stayed their before,or are familiar with the general neighborhood ,would like to know some feedback

Awalim and TribalCon in Labrys magazine

There is an interview with me in this month's Labrys, Atlanta's lesbian mag. The author saw our Halloween Red Light thanks to spiffy business manager Henry Diller and really liked our take on belly dance. The article isn't perfect, there is a bit of blending on quotes and things taken out of context but it is a very positive! You can download the entire magazine (it is the small half size type of mag) at:

http://www.labrysatl.com/labrys_feb_2009_online.pdf

The article is on pages 22 and 23

Hi all,
Karadeniz (Denys) here, one of the music teachers for TribalCon

Unexpectedly, I will be able to arrive Thursday evening! I'll try to make it on time for the Thursday seminar. I am looking for someone who can give me a place to sleep Thursday night. Floor space is fine, I'm bringing my pad and sleeping bag. I'll check here again tonight and tomorrow morning (Wed night and Thursday morning) if Tribe.net is working, and I'll check my email "fodder4fun at yahoo.com". (just change the "at" you know...)

Thank you,

Denys

Last year I roomed with someone else and we had a fridge in the room. This year I made my own reservations. I noticed on the hotel website that fridges in the room aren't listed as an ammenity. I tried to email the hotel to see what to do to get one two weeks ago and haven't gotten a response. Anyone know the procedure for getting a fridge in your room?

Thinking about selling my early bird ticket...would there be any takers???

So I bought the $240 early bird ticket but I am in a pickle with my job....I may be loosing it come the end of March but we do not know yet (it is in a gov't appeal process and we are to find out anytime between now and march 4th). Thought for sure we would know by now which would make the decision on going a lot easier on me.

Anyhoo, enough of me babbling. Just wanted to gauge interest as I will go if no one is looking....

Thanks and sorry for my rambling

this is my first tribalcon so excuse the newby question...
am i allowed to take still photographs? of course i know no flash for the show saturday, i read that in the faq's. but in general for the entire weekend, is still photography allowed? i dont want to take pictures for financial gain or anything. just for a personal photo book of my first tribalcon experience and to show the family.
just wanted to make sure before i go taking pictures and get reprimanded :-)

something im doing to save money at tribalcon..sharing in case someone else might want to do it

I definitely love to save cash..im usually rather cheap and keep a budget (have to with kids)
so i was thinking of ways to save money since I know the vendors are going to annihilate my bank account. :-) food can save a lot of money..or spend...
i happen to own a generic version of the mike tyson grill hehe. and im gonna bring mine...and stop at the grocery store in atlanta and grab some cheap lil things to cook up. and cook my food on my mini grill in my room. just plug it in and go.

it might sound corny but i just thought about it today and i think its cheaper than ordering hotel food to my room or going out to eat for lunch every day etc.

just trying to figure out a way to attend but i have a 2 year old angel to take care of first.

I really need some help! I had to wait to book my flights until I cleared missing two days of classes with Professors (yay college!) and now I'm screwed. I'm flying in Thursday night and leaving Monday morning, BUT I can only get a room from Friday to Monday. Can any one help me? I'll sleep on your floor and split the room cost for one night or I can share the whole weekend ( if some one has a double room, it would be nice not to be on the floor for four nights) and split the cost. Please if you can help PM me. I need to book soon before I'm sleeping in the parking lot :-(

There are still about 10 full weekend passes left and then the workshops will be completely sold out. There are still show tickets available and the After Party food from Nicola's is still available to purchase, we will let everyone know ahead of time when we will be closing those down.

We are all very grateful that even during these hard economic times everyone is still coming out to support these amazing artists!!!!

Members of Awalim at Art Bar, Jan 17th! Plus Delirium, Asharah and Mezmer Society!

Never say that nothing cool ever happens in Columbia. Ever.

Four of the finest Tribal Bellydance acts on the east coast, ranging from old school to new school, gothic to vaudeville, appear together at Art Bar (1211 Park Street in the Vista) on Saturday, January 17th. This is shaping up to be an absolutely killer show, and I'm so excited to be bringing these acts to Columbia, SC. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!

Performances start at 9 PM. For the mere cost of $5, you will get to see:

Delirium Tribal from Columbia, SC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pZD0UrCC7w
With its solid foundation in American Tribal Style Bellydance (the original tribal bellydance, for those following along at home), Delirium Tribal does it all: ATS improvisation, Tribal and Tribal Fusion, and even fire and circus arts with Columbia Alternacirque. Delirium will open the show with a classic ATS improv set, and later in the evening we'll show you the new stuff we've been working on: new solos, choreographies and an acrobatic, death-defying, six-person sword choreography that we really hope doesn't kill anybody.

Awalim from Atlanta, GA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX-LmaEZhVY
East Coast Tribal represent. Awalim was formed in 1999 under the Direction of Ziah Ali McKinney-Taylor as a group to bring World Fusion Tribal Bellydance to the stages of Atlanta and the Southeast US. Awalim's particular flavor of Tribal is decidedly upbeat and earthy while being sophisticated and urban, bringing what they feel are Atlanta's strongest characteristics to the Tribal genre.

Asharah from Alexandria, VA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvgzRKIPShM
Asharah is one of the rising star soloists in Tribal Bellydance. Known for her dark fusion and goth sensibilities, as well as immaculate technique fusing ticking and locking with classic tribal, Asharah's dramatic performances will blow you out of your chair and give you a taste of where Modern Tribal fusion is going.

The Mezmer Society from Asheville, NC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mgpDLQ_9wU
Onca and August had so much fun playing at Art Bar with Alternacirque last July, they are coming back and (I've been told) bringing more musicians. Founded in 2007, the Society fuses diverse elements such belly dance, cabaret performance, Romany music, foppish occultism, unapologetically pretentious Belle Epoque café living, goodwill, bad behavior, misappropriated pop songs, and the horribly misguided notion that one can try and squeeze an entire Balkan brass band into one accordion. And if all of my previous experience with the Mezmer Society holds, they will play and create mayhem all night long. Crazy kids.

TribalCon Dirt, Dish, Scoop - We Want Yours!

Christy and I were working on an article for Zaghareet magazine, and we wanted to solicit some opinions from all you lovely ladies out there. If you're interested, please respond to the few survey questions below.

I know some of us responded to the question about why we dance last year, and if you're willing to let us use some of those answers in an article, please let us know. Or, you can start from scratch below!

* Why do you dance? And more specifically, what is it about tribal bellydance that rings your bell?

* In your own personal practice, where are you right now? What are you working on, what's inspiring you, where do you want to go from here?

* If you have attended TribalCon before, what are some of your favorite memories (or stories, classes, things you've bought, friends you've met, things you've learned)?

* What do you want to get out of TribalCon this year? What classes are you most looking forward to? (And, yes. I ended that in a preposition-- it's okay.) Check the class descriptions posted online: http://www.tribalcon.com/download-events.pdf

* Are you willing to let us use your answers in an article, and if so, by what name would you like to be quoted?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Onca and August are another two talented performers who we are lucky to have in the Southern Tribal community! Onca has been a lively part of the staff since TribalCon 2 and August found himself right at home last year so we are welcoming him back home this year as part of the family.

Onça O'Leary, Bandit Queen

A director, event producer, and full-throttle entertainer, Onça's touring project for 2008-2009 is "The Mezmer Society", a collaboration with Balkan accordionist August Hoerr and their musical ensemble. The Society presents a delicious melange of Eastern European music, powerful bellydance technique, goodwill, bad behavior, and sultry oddements. The year 2008 saw The Mezmer Society as featured instructors at TribalCon & Southern Fried Tribal in Atlanta, TribalFest in California, Tribal Revolution in Chicago and TribOriginal in North Carolina.

Director of Baraka Mundi Live Music & Dance Ensemble since 1999, Onça has long been known for her evocative stage presence. Baraka Mundi pioneered tribal bellydance in the Carolinas and was nominated for 'Best Kept Secret'. Onça was the first in the world to be Certified in General Skills by Carolena Nericcio, founder of American Tribal Bellydance. Her annual dance camp, TribOriginal, was nominated in 2008 as 'Best Event' in the national Golden Belly Awards. She is also an internationally published author and illustrator under her given name, Lauren O'Leary.

For more info on Onça, visit The Mezmer Society: Luscious Cabaret & Balkan Ruckus & Baraka Mundi at www.barakamundi.com/mezmer TribOriginal: Tribal Dance, Music & Culture Camp at www.triboriginal.org.

August

August taught himself to play accordion as angsty teenager, and after discovering Middle Eastern music, began working with Tribal dancers in 1999. Discovering a mutual interest in Balkan music and quirky party songs, he formed The Mezmer Society with Onça (Baraka Mundi) in the Autumn of 2007. They have taught and performed at events including Tribal Fest, TribalCon, and Tribal Revolution, and they are scheduled to continue touring throughout the United States. The Mezmer Society is fully committed to spreading the aesthetic of hafla joy as quickly and loudly as possible.

In addition to to The Mezmer Society, August is a member of the quartet Ashes in Order, and maintains a career as an internationally represented figurative painter. He is the president of the Institute for the Advancement of Occultism and Aerophonics (previously Asheville Accordion Club), and he has released albums with the cinematic trio Soora Gameela, and Greek fusion band Makari. August lives in Asheville, North Carolina and is currently working on material for his first solo album.

Saturday : 12:15-1:45pm

Onça O'Leary & August Hoerr - The Mezmer Society : Narrative Bellydance - Out there dancing? Have something to say! This high-spirited, concept-driven class presents a range of evocative moods - spirited, celebratory, passionate, somber...maybe even a little bit of Evil. Onça has undertaken intense study of Narrative bellydance and is on a serious mission to nurture authentic self-expression among the world's Tribal Fusionistas.

Friday : 4:00-5:30pm

August : Sing, Gadje, Sing! - (All levels. For everyone who wants to sing, plus melody and percussion accompaniment.) We will learn how to sing some Southeastern European songs, explore different ways to harmonize with each other, and deepen an appreciation for loud, clashing notes.

Saturday : 4:00-5:30pm

August : Soloing and Improvisation - (All levels, melodic instruments) We will workshop a variety of ideas that can improve your solos and taqsims in Middle Eastern and Eastern European music. The class will also address group dynamics such as how to organize in informal settings and how to play a supportive role for other musicians.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Awalim has provided our own percussion for many of our shows and love showing how you can do it for your own dance company. Majda spent the Fall semester of 2008 taking music classes at the American University at Cairo and will be sharing her new found knowledge with everyone!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R335wdIdMS8

Awalim was formed in 1999 under the Direction of Ziah Ali McKinney-Taylor as a group to bring World Fusion Tribal Bellydance to the stages of Atlanta and the Southest US. Awalim's particular flavor of Tribal is decidedly upbeat and earthy while being sophisticated and urban, bringing what we feel are Atlanta's strongest characteristics to the Tribal genre.

What does Awalim mean?

Awalim is plural for Almeh. An Almeh was an educated entertainer that was very highly thought of in Egypt during the 1800's. She was educated in music, poetry, song, dance, history, religion and politics. All of these things were considered interconnected and important knowledge for any real artist. The Awalim were very well respected and left Cairo when Napoleon's invading army treated them as "common" entertainers. We call ourselves Awalim because education is very important to us. We all study at least one musical instrument along with the finger cymbals (zils). I also stress the history and sociology of the wide spread area that is called the Middle East which brings us (and our audience) closer to an understanding of the culture we are emulating.

Friday : 10:00-11:30am

Awalim : Drumming 101 for dancers – The Drumming Dancer, Teejei & Majda of Awalim - If you've never picked up a drum, or have taken the cursory "whack" at it now and then, this workshop is for you! This class is an absolute introduction to the most basic concepts of drumming for the dancer who wishes to begin her study of rhythm. We will begin with hand and body posture for the DUM, TEK, and KA sounds as played on the Doumbek and Tar/Frame Drum. We will then discuss useful musical concepts and practice several popular rhythms including the beledi family, chiftitelli, and others.

We also had to start from square one in building a live music and dance show for our Georgia Ren Faire engagement and it taught us a lot. We'd like to share some of our secrets with you, including standing and moving with your drum, interacting with your fellow performers and the audience, and the Dueling Drums!

Please bring a doumbek and zils, and a frame drum if you have one.

Jen Speiden of Mandara (WV)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Jen's anatomy class was the most discussed class at TribalCon last year. This year she promises to cover abdominal muscles important to bellydance.

http://www.innerawareness.net

Creative movement has always been an integral part of Jennifer's personal and professional life. As a physical therapist, yoga teacher, Pilates instructor and belly dance teacher and performer, she enjoys integrating movement arts and healing arts into her work and play for overall health, well being and enjoyment. She loves that this dance form can encourage people of all ages and ability levels to become more aware of their bodies and themselves.

Jennifer is a licensed physical therapist graduating in 1998 with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy. Her yoga training is as a Certified Integrative Yoga Therapy Teacher, and she has completed a Hatha Yoga teacher training with Anna Pittman. She is a Registered Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance and is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists.

Saturday : 4:00-5:30pm

Jen : Anatomy for Belly Dancers - An understanding of anatomy is extremely valuable for dancers and dance teachers. It can allow you to access better technique by knowing what muscles initiate and guide a movement as well as what musculoskeletal factors can limit a movement. Knowledge of the body and how it moves can also allow a dancer to move safely without injury. It can help a teacher communicate with students how to move more effectively with better body awareness and also how to encourage proper biomechanics and injury prevention. In this workshop, Jennifer Speiden will introduce some important anatomy concepts that all dancers should know to help keep you and your students dancing pain-free with grace and ease for years to come. The class will include lecture, visual aides and movement explorations to help participants fully understand the mechanisms behind the movements.

Sunday : 9:00-10:00am

Jen : Yoga and Pilates for Belly Dancers - In this class, students will begin by exploring the use of the abdomen, chest, spine and pelvis through a series of yoga postures and dynamic flows. Using Pilates inspired strengthening and stabilizing exercises as well as yoga-based breathing techniques and poses, students will work to develop flexible, fluid strength and most of all, an increased awareness of their bodies. This class is appropriate for individuals of all skill levels. Please bring a yoga mat.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Asharah (Washington, DC) www.asharah.com
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Asharah first came to my attention because of her articulate writing on Tribe.net and in her blog. To find out that she is an amazing dancer and teacher has pleased me to no end and I can't wait to share her with you!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=bvgzRKIPShM
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zERHZz_k7wA

Asharah has been performing since the age of six as a dancer, figure skater, and singer. As a bellydancer, she is best known for her dramatic fusion of tribal and cabaret styles, but also has extensive experience in Turkish, Egyptian and American bellydance. She recently earned her Level 2 certification in the Suhaila Salimpour format, and aims to blend this format with American Tribal Style bellydance. Her technique, musicality, and finger cymbal playing skills have been noted and admired across the country. She is deeply grateful to Alexia (Kim Leary), Artemis Mourat, Suhaila Salimpour, and others who have guided her along the way.

In addition to traveling around the country to teach sold-out workshops, she teaches regular tribal belly dance classes at two of the Washington, DC, area's finest dance studios, Joy of Motion and Saffron Dance. She currently performs around the country and periodically at the Shisha Lounge in Sterling, Virginia. She will be releasing her first instructional DVD Modern Tribal Bellydance, produced by WorldDanceNewYork, in January 2008, and she is featured on the groundbreaking DVD Gothic Bellydance: The Darker Side of Fusion, produced by World Dance l;New York. From 2003-2005 she performed with the avant-garde troupe Martiya Possession and before that was a two year member of Raks Odalisque, Princeton University's Middle Eastern dance troupe. She also provided live percussion and graphic design for Maduro's debut release Shimmer Sustain.

Asharah is not only an accomplished dancer but also has a B.A. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University. Ever since her childhood, Asharah has been deeply interested in Middle Eastern arts and culture. She believes that every belly dancer must know the history and culture of this dance, whether she is performing it in its traditional forms or fusing it with others.

Friday : 11:45-1:15pm

Asharah : The Cymbalist Movement, Integrating Finger Cymbals into Your Dance - Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less... Finger cymbals aren't scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! Asharah will lead you through an intense warm up, teach drills that layer movements and cymbal playing, introduce common cymbal patterns found in Middle Eastern music, and teach a short dance combination focusing on the playing of your cymbals with the music and your movements.

Sunday : 10:00-11:30am

Asharah : Pops, Locks, and Tick-Tocks, Technical Tricks to Mechanize your Movement - Inspired by robots, experimental electronic music, and the poppin' and lockin' B-Boys of the 70s and 80s, Asharah has integrated mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge. After drilling these movements, she'll teach a short combination that demonstrates how these movements can be used in a performance. She'll also briefly discuss concepts of electronic music, how it is created, and how to listen to the nuances of music made by machines and computers.
Donna Mejia (CO) www.donnabodyvision.com
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Donna has a growing fan base in the Tribal belly dance community for a very good reason...Tribal dancers love fusion and hers is not just bellydance fusion but dance fusion with a love for Tribal bellydance added in!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=87FXlgOUiJs

Donna Mejia is a choreographer, lecturer, teacher, administrator, and performer specializing in contemporary dance, traditions of the African Diaspora, and new fusion traditions in world electronica. She taught at Colorado College for 10 years and was Director of the Colorado College International Summer Dance Festival for the last half of her term.

For twelve years she served as managing director of the award-winning Harambee African Dance Ensemble of CU-Boulder. She continues to teach, choreograph and perform Modern dance, Improvisiation, Hip Hop, Jazz, Arabic Tribal Fusion and traditional dances of the African Diaspora for Colorado College as well as colleges and dance festivals internationally. Donna is an authorized instructor of Brazilian Silvestre Modern Dance Technique.

Beginning September 2006, Donna will be in Massachusetts for a two-year assignment as Guest Artist in Residence with the Smith College Dance Department and the Five College Dance Department.

Donna shares her life with husband, Shatta (educator and musician); and daughter, Ajah (born 2001).
Thurday :

Donna Mejia : Presentation/Lecture - For the Love of the Craft: A Thoughtful Approach to Our Dance Legacy. Donna Mejia is the first to hold a Tribal Fusion position in the higher education system and will overview her provocative research regarding the ethics of dance fusion. The exploration of ethnic/cultural dance fusion mandates that artists reconcile the values of indigenous dance traditions with agendas of the entertainment world. This presentation will explore the inevitable transformation of old and new dance traditions in performance, and seek to define what responsibility choreographers/performers have as cultural ambassadors in a “cut and paste” environment. With her usual candor and humor, Donna will address the very controversial issues we have all encountered at one time or another in our love for, and dedication to, this genre.

Saturday : 10:30-12:00pm

Donna Mejia : “How Do You DO That!?” Curves, Slides, Waves and Hits - In this workshop, Smith College faculty member Donna Mejia details signature moves that she is asked about most frequently. After a vigorous warm up and substantial stretching, dancers will receive a variety of stationary and moving progressions that are intended to give heavy emphasis to the end of musical phrases and powerful downbeat accents. This workshop is all about responding to and punctuating the percussiveness in the music we enjoy.

Sunday : 3:30-5:00pm

Donna Mejia : Clarifying Technique The Art of Refinement and Physical Integrity - This workshop summarizes and details the most efficient tools for unleashing the intelligence of the body in dance. Topics covered include breathing techniques, optimal alignment, muscle efficiency and building longevity through precision and strength. Rather than focusing on choreography, Donna will detail cross-training tips from various classical traditions that create a sophisticated and polished dancer.
Jas of Khafif (PA) www.khafif.com
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Jas' rhythm classes have become staples for the TribalCon attendees each year. Last year his music editing class was one of the most talked about classes since it is a hurdle that almost all dancers and musicians have to face.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq_tLi_dReY

Jas drums for Khafif (a Middle Eastern bellydance fusion group), the Balkan Babes (Bulgarian Folk and Vocal Ensemble), and the Vardo Sisters (Balkan Romani music). He specializes in traditional rhythmic accompaniment to folk, fusion, and belly dance music on percussion instruments such as Darabuka/Dumbek, Riqq, Daf, and Tupan/Davul. When not playing percussion he also can be found playing an ancient Turkish folk stringed instrument called a Baglama Saz.

Aside from drumming he maintains a set of web pages on Middle Eastern drum rhythms, dabbles in building traditional musical instruments, works a day job as a computer-engineer/mad scientist, teaches about traditional rhythms, is restoring his 90 year-old Arts&Crafts style house, and tries desperately to have enough time in the day to ponder the wonders of the universe.

Saturday : 10:30-12:00pm

Jas : Simple Music Editing – Want some cool music for your dance, but track 5 isn't long enough? Don't have your own band to do that special mix just for you? Confused about what sample rate means? In this class we will discuss some basic theory of digital music and figure out how to do some simple editing tasks using your computer and freely available sound editing software. The class will focus on a few common issues and should be accessible to nearly anyone who can drive a mouse.

Friday : 11:45-1:15pm

Jas : Rhythms – Bring your ears, drum, and brain! We will discuss some traditional Balkan and Middle Eastern rhythms that you might not have heard very often -- how to identify them by listening; how are they structured, played and ornamented.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving (not that shopping "Black Friday" spirit, the part where we are supposed to be thankful for what we DO have) I wanted to let you know why I am thankful for each of the teachers we have at TribalCon this year. I am going to send out information, three teachers at a time, all this week so that you can take time to read about them, watch some videos of their work, and learn about which classes they are teaching to decide how to plan your TribalCon this year. Each of our teachers are jewels in the Tribal community and we are grateful to have them all in one place for one weekend!

I also wanted to mention again (since we have had quite a few questions about it) that T-shirts can only be bought until Dec 6th or will come with your pre registration "Early Bird" package if your register for the whole weekend before Sat Dec 6th....but there will be NO T-shirt sales after next weekend or at the event.
Ariellah (CA) www.ariellah.com
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Ariellah is one of the most requested teachers on the surveys filled out by TribalCon attendees over the years, so everyone is very excited to have her here this year. We are very lucky that we get not only a dance class in her own "dark" style, but that she agreed to a yoga infused dance class as well!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=D2DCIrdoxsM
http://youtube.com/watch?v=v_wjoli327w

Ariellah studied classical ballet with the Royal Academy of Dance of London for twelve years, beginning at age three. After a four-year break from dance that included two years in the Peace Corps on Africa's Ivory Coast, she returned to the United States eager to learn the dance of her Moroccan ancestry.

Ariellah performs tribal and dark fusion belly dance worldwide. She has studied and performed belly dance for the past seven years, both with Janine Ryle of Danse Mahgreb and as a founding member of The Indigo with Rachel Brice. Her style infuses many genres of belly dance, all with a modern dark flavour that is uniquely her own. She is featured on many DVDs, including the first of its kind "Gothic BellyDance" DVD and her first instructional DVD, "Contemporary BellyDance and Yoga Conditioning" and she also won first place in Siren's Insanity belly dance competition in 2004. She is considered a leader in the innovative new genre of Gothic Belly Dance and is known for her strong technique and precision of movements. www.ariellah.com

Friday : 2:15-3:45pm

Ariellah : Dark Fusion Belly Dance Combinations and Choreography - Learn Ariellah's unique style of belly dance by working with her on dark fusion belly dance combinations and choreography. The workshop includes a yoga infused warm up and repetitive drilling of dark fusion infused belly dance combinations. Students will learn a short choreography that infuses the combinations learned in the workshop.

Saturday : 9:00-10:30am

Ariellah : Yoga Infused Belly Dance - Ariellah's workshop will focus on yoga infused strengthening and stretching exercises that directly correlate to our belly dance movements and postures. These exercises will allow the student's body to open up to the movements of belly dance, including shoulders, chest, belly and hips. A brief drilling section will follow a long, intensive yoga session, in order to better understand how the stretches correlate to the movements, allowing students to gain a more fluid, open, strong and grounded physique to accompany their dance practice.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Nevik is another Pennsic friend joining the music roster this year! He came down to attend TribalCon last year and fit in so well we had to ask him to join in a more official capacity this year.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=chzKvhkN2SY

Kevin "Nevik" Hartnell comes from a family of percussionists. His good fortune has provided opportunities to study and perform with many great drummers and share that wealth of knowledge by teaching. With a lifetime of drumming experience that includes thousands of performances in the United States as well as various other countries, studio session work since the age of 15, contributions to music for films, commercials, and many recordings, he travels regularly, performing and teaching workshops from his darbuka handbook, the "Tekronomicon ." Check the schedule to see when and where he'll be next.

When not teaching or performing, Kevin is usually involved in photography, travel, curry, learning how-to, graphic design, and running.

Saturday : 12:15-1:45pm

Nevik : Doumbek Exercises - The workshop will cover a collection of exercises to build articulation, dexterity, strength, power, speed, and improve dynamics to become a more musical player. Open to all skill levels!

Sunday : 10:00-11:30am

Nevik : Introduction to Split-Finger Technique for Darbuka - The workshop will cover this technique popularized in Turkey by learning strokes, hand/finger positions, combinations/exercises, and how to apply them in common rhythms. Open to all skill levels!
Megha of Devyani (AL) www.devyani.net
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
We are so lucky that Megha, the teaching partner of Carolena Nericcio of FCBD, is part of our Southern Tribal community. We are glad that her family and her dance company, Devyani, love TribalCon and grace us with their presence each year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpB4oArrT_Y

Megha began performing very early in life. She took her first dance classes at about the age of 4 and has been creating and performing ever since. Theatre soon caught her attention and that was her passion throughout her schooling years. It was in 1996 that she discovered American Tribal Style Bellydance and immediately shifted her focus to this art form.

In San Francisco, Megha studied ATS with the originator of the style from 1996 - 1998. Upon returning to the Southeast, she began teaching ATS classes in order to create a community of people to dance with. She was the first to offer these classes in this region and has continued teaching pure ATS for the last 10 years. She continues to teach and perform at sold out workshops across the country and around the world both individually and on the Tribal Pura tour with her teacher/partner, Carolena Nericcio.

In 2003 Megha completed teacher certification with Carolena Nericcio (creator of ATS and founder of FatChance BellyDance) and entered into an exclusive partnership with her. They now take their love and appreciation of this elegant dance style in its original form on the road to co-teach the technique and artistic vision created by Carolena over the last 20 years.

Megha directs the Birmingham, AL based Devyani Dance Company and runs Devyani Dance Center, home of her dance company and a hub of international and ethnic dance styles in Birmingham. Under her direction, Devyani has performed at countless festivals, weddings, corporate events and private parties over the last 9 years and has been nominated for multiple cultural and artistic awards.
Friday : 10:00-11:30am

Megha : ATS Drills for Leading and Following - Communication is one of the subtle but very exciting aspects of Tribal Style dance. Using a series of simple but challenging drills, learn the concept of Leading and Following, Formations, Cues and Transitions and Music Interpretation. *Dancers should know the basics of Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreo and Arm Undulations, Shimmy, Arabic Basic, Egyptian Basic, Pivot Bumps and Choo-choos. We will review this quickly but the focus will be on drilling in formations.

Saturday : 2:30-4:00pm

Megha : Finger Cymbals for the Tribal Dancer - Playing a musical instrument while you dance adds another level of excitement to your performance. Finger cymbals are an important part of ATS dancing. Learn or refine the basic finger cymbal patterns and specialty patterns played while dancing ATS. Even if you've been intimidated by "zills" up to this point, you'll leave this class loving them.

*Bring your own finger cymbals.

Thrs Nov 6- Bad bad service on the sleeper train but the views as dawn breaks over the Highlands is worth it. There is snow on the highest mountains and lots of fog in the valleys, very surreal to wake up to. Lindsey picks me up at the station and takes me back to her lovely house which is a converted outbuilding on the grounds of Culloden House, which is now a hotel. She makes me an amazing omelet and we have lots of lively conversation about people's views of ATS. She drops me back in Inverness so that she can go to school (she is almost done with midwifery school). Inverness is amazing despite me being absolutely exhausted. I walk about a bit, find the tourist info office and find a walking tour to go on after lunch. I fall asleep at the table waiting for lunch to come out, I am so tired I order poorly and can only eat a portion of it. I take my backpack back to the rail station to put in a locker and then go meet the guy for the walking tour. Very silly but interesting guy, I am the only person on the tour so it was totally worth the money. He asks lots of questions about my family line but it made me realize how little I know. Went back to the station to get my pack and charge my phone. Call Morgan and talk about their trip tomorrow night. I walk about the mall a bit, I see the little top hats mounted on headbands there, and then Lindsey retrieves me and we go back home for dinner with her family. Then we are off to my ATS workshop at a lecture hall at her school. Workshop is great, I teach Nikki's Dragonfly, Arabic 5, Funky Fish, African Egyptian and Raj Choo Choo. Head back home in very ambient Scottish drizzle. I will never never never get used to cars being on the wrong side of the road, especially in conjunction with roundabouts!

Fri Nov 7- I sleep til 11am!!!! *sigh* Do a bit of laundry, eat and then Lindsey takes me to some cairns that line up with the winter solstice. There were only about 5 left but a map showed the hundreds that used to there. I could only stand there and imagine the harsh life that these people must have endured and how out of reach any info about them is. Had another lovely meal with Lindsey's family and then went to Blockbuster with the kids (bought candy bars at the counter! the US really does need to get over this stupid obsession with corn syrup), watched IronMan with her ten year old son. Sat up a long time talking with Lindsey about our birth stories and how dreadful the medicalization of birth is.

Sat Nov 8- Got up at the crack of dawn to get on a train down to York to meet Ava and Morgan, Lindsey and I were up way too late talking...argh. The fam made good time getting on an early train to York and beat me by an hour. There was also a "bridge strike" which meant something had hit a bridge and damaged it so there were lots of delays on my end. Went for a "curry" and had pretty hard time ordering because of the language barrier. Sickly sweet Indian food but Ava loved it of course. Went for a walk around the Shambles that night, there is a great open air market on the weekends and have fun drinking hot cocoa with a Laplander who had a great conversation with Ava about Obama. Cheap princess dresses everywhere! Ava falls asleep as we go to a Thai place so we end up just taking it back to Blossom Hotel, jet lag and three year olds are not a good mix. Turns out that was the best choice ever, we ate yummy Thai while watching BBC, had showers (en suite!) and Ava was in a great mood at the end of the night.

Sun Nov 9- Had my first English breakfast, the staff are very nice about Ava and my food allergies. Ava is very tired and does not want to walk, we cave and start asking about buying a "pushchair" (a stroller). We take a bus tour (Ava naps) and get to see the new archeological dig where they found more Viking ruins. Afterwards we grab a flyer for a production of Cinderella at the tourist office as a powerful totem to energize her. She is all the sudden having fun and loves the walk along the wall. We still stop in to a dollar store and buy a stroller that pulls to the right, the rest of the day has theme music...stroll stroll stroll, thwak (as we pivot it back left), stroll stroll stroll thwak.... We had a great time at York Minster, the museum about the excavations of the Roman fort underneath are fascinating. We ate at a gourmet burger place for dinner (I had some of our bread with us, I carried over a whole loaf from the States) and I had a coke!!!!
Next post is the rest of our days in York and LONDON!!!!

UK Travelogue part 1

Finally home again! Our UK trip was amazing and we are still a little dazed. These are my bare bones summaries of those 19 days and hopefully Kate and TeeJei will add their adventures in Glasgow, Liverpool, York, London and Aylesbury! I want to thank Deirdre & Steffi for bringing us over there and for Cherie, Lindsey and Philippa for putting up with me during my travels around the UK.

Random observations: Sunny side up eggs, English plumbing weirdness and not rinsing dishes make the UK seem more foreign than I was expecting. Two out of the four homes I stayed at owned a rabbit (maybe three... Cherie, is there a rabbit at the farm?). Walking fast keeps you warm. You can't ever tell what is going to come out of TeeJei's mouth. Mukluk/UGGs and miniskirts are the height of fashion. I ate more pork in 17 days than I have in the past year. Everyone's houses are very tidy! I love small refridgerators. What is veggie-min and meat-min??? Jet lag sucks. Was asked whether we were Tribal Fusion (mean RB brand) or ATS many times and had a time deciding whether to say both or neither. There really isn't a concept that there are other kinds of Tribal over here in the States.

Thrs Oct 30- me, Kate and TeeJei flew out of Atlanta on a direct flight to Gatwick London-British Airways baby! Didn't sleep well at all.

Fri Oct 31- We got into Gatwick early in the morn and had to learn all about the rail system the hard way (we missed our connecting train at Euston to take us up to Glasgow and got up there two hours late). We had a rough learning curve on pay toilettes, queuing for the train and finding unreserved seats on the train. I had a great time on the train since I got to sit at a table with three other chatty people, everyone wants to know about Obama. One girl is heading up to the lake district to a Halloween party. When we get to the Glasgow train station there are lots of teens running around in costumes, too much fun! I stayed with Dierdre and the girls stayed down the street from the TribalVibe venue with Kate's sister who is attending university there. Neil brought us blissful Indian food and Deirdre had carrot lentil soup ready for us when we get to her house...I lived off that soup that weekend, need to get the recipe!

Sat Nov 1- Up early to teach three classes at TribalVibe North (Technique, Zill Drill and Spins/Level Changes) and then perform at the show. The venue is a great old community building. We love Scottish audiences and want to stay forever. Everyone is always wowed by the candle puja. I think that Deirdre is going to put some of it on YouTube eventually. Tried to see some of the show from the back, saw a good veil fan piece, fun Bollywood, cute boy drummers (TeeJei found another husband...yum).

Sun Nov 2- Up early again to teach more classes today, lots of moaning and groaning in our chilly room for the technique class that morn but everyone was laughing and enjoying it in the end (especially after Neil brought us coffee and tea). There is some sort of West African church service next door to the class and the singing is incredible. The sword duet class went smashingly, had everyone acting like pirates. Deirdre drove me around downtown Glasgow a bit and we ate at my first Wagamama...lovely!!!! Watched Stephen Fry's America (the episode with the bellydancer in it).

Mon Nov 3- Took the train into Glasgow, ate at Wagamama again and spent the day walking around Glasgow, taking a bus tour and way too much time at the only Apple store in Scotland (I hate AT&T) which was around the corner from the Wagamama (there is always a Wagamama around the corner from an Apple store there). Went back to Deirdre's and spent a quiet night planning for the Shewsbury and Inverness trips. Morgan and Ava called from the vet, they were there having BoyCat put to sleep because he had blood coming out of his nose and the vet found a tumor sitting on his kidneys. Deirdre went to her first prenatal yoga class.

Tues Nov 4- Got up and repacked, walked through Pollock Park to the Burrell Collection to see the suzanis. Got horribly lost in a huge wooded park full of museums with no signs once you are inside the park to direct you to them. Just barely caught the train out of Deirdre's neighborhood that got me to the Crewe train on time. Caught the train to Shewsbury at Crewe and sat with the mayor of Wem, the town I was getting off at to stay with Cherie at her husband's family farm, Whixall Hall. The farmhouse smelled just like ours in TN and I was even served country ham (gammon) and eggs for dinner just like home. This is the only part of the UK that felt familiar in a very family way, I can totally believe that this is where my grandmother comes from.

Wed Nov 5- Woke up to the news that Barak Obama is president! Brilliant!
Had a chatty mornng with Cherie about sponsoring workshops and bellydance and lots of other stuff and we walked around the farm a bit. Walked along a canal that was originally part of the big canal system but now it is a nature preserve. Drove into Shrewsbury and parked at Cherie's mom's and walked about. Ate at an old pub and had a COKE in a restaurant (because no corn syrup!!!). Went to a tourist info shop and got a Cadfael tour book. Dropped Cherie at her dress/gift shop and then went to the abbey. It was already closed (everything closes early because it is pitch dark at 4pm!!!) but the part that was interesting to me was the grounds where the dormitory, herb garden and workshop would be...all of Cadfael's turf! Of course all of those parts have been ripped down because any monastery portions of churches were ripped down by Henry the VIII but I was still able to orient myself to where all the things once stood, it was very amazing. Walked around for a bit more while Cherie did some merchandise shopping for her shop. We grabbed a snack at her mom's and then walked to a pub. I got a "Sprite" and drank it under a 13th century wall mural of the Last Supper. The Rajisthani workshop went great, it was the stuff that all the Shrewsbury dancers commented on at the Glasgow show so I geared the workshop to their interest. Cherie got me to the train station in time to catch the train to Crewe and then I caught a Caledonian Sleeper train to Inverness. Next installment is Inverness and getting to see Morgan and Ava again!!!
